Dear Members and Subscribers,
Each year the Australian Branch of the International Law Association provides volunteer judges for the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, the world’s oldest, largest and most prestigious international legal advocacy competition (see http://www.ilsa.org/jessuphome).
The DLA Piper Australian National Rounds of the Jessup competition will be held at the Australian National University College of Law in Canberra in the week beginning 2 February 2015. Law students from 17 law schools across Australia will be competing, and the competition culminates in a final in the High Court.
The competition organisers need to fill around 120 judging spots from government, private practice and academia. Volunteer judges will serve together with two others on a panel of three judges. Volunteers need not be trained or admitted as legal practitioners, but should have an interest, academic background or practical experience in international law, oral advocacy, or moot competitions.
Volunteer judges are required for the following moot sessions:
- Round 1, Wednesday 4 February 2015, 9.00am – 11.30am
- Round 2, Wednesday 4 February 2015, 12.30pm – 3.00pm
- Round 3, Wednesday 4 February 2015, 4.00pm – 6.30pm
- Round 4, Thursday 5 February 2015, 9.00am – 11.30am
- Round 5, Thursday 5 February 2015, 12.30pm – 3.00pm
- Round 6, Thursday 5 February 2015, 4.00pm – 6.30pm
Volunteer judges will be provided with an information pack containing the moot problem, moot court procedures, and some suggested questions that judges can ask.
If you are able to assist, please email me at Patrick.Wall@ag.gov.au by Friday 16 January 2015, using the following table to indicate your date/time preferences, the number of moots you would like to judge (if you could make yourself available for more than one moot that would be most appreciated), and a brief overview of the nature of your interest, academic background or practical experience in international law, oral advocacy, or moot competitions (for the purposes of ensuring that judging panels are well balanced):
